Title: Problems
Post by: Bianca on March 03, 2007, 03:57:30 pm

I have noticed a white, rather wide band at the top and bottom of my page
that reads:

i     You are not authorized to view this page

You might not have permission to view this directory or page

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It does not seem to affect anything, although I have not posted today, except for this.

Thank you.
Bianca

Yes, I have the same thing, It doesn't seem to be preventing anything from being posted.

I think there used to be some type of advertising running in that space.

Hi,

That's simply the place where advertising for the site is placed (which we aren't the ones that handle). When no advertising there is present, you get that default message. Don't mind it, it has nothng to do with the forum or it's performance.  Thanks.

I am frustrated by the fact that when you post something new you cannot see it at "new posts".  That was one thing I appreciated in the system at AR.  When you posted it would be at the top of the new list.  Sometimes when I want to get back to something to add, then I can't find it!

I didn't know where to put this and I didn't want to start a new thread, since
it really isn't that important.

Most of my posts are copied from books I own and I type them.  I am a lousy
typist, even on a good day.  And today was a 'bad day' and I was slower than
molasses, my fingers just didn't want to move.   Of course, somebody got a little
annoyed........Where the H--l is the rest of it?

If, as happened today, you read a post by me and it seems to "go nowhere",
it's usually because I am typing the next part.

So, please don't get annoyed and check back later.

Love and Peace,
Bianca

Greetings,

I have noticed that, in my profile, my email is listed as being hidden, and yet, whenever I see one of my posts, there is an option to email me.

This isn't necessarily a problem to me, but it's not working, either way. (I enjoy emails. they give me a break from what i'm doing ;D)

Title: Re: Problems
Post by: bluducky on March 27, 2007, 09:02:36 pm
Ahem.. back again.

I was thinking that perhaps the General section could be moved up the list, so that more people post there. I went there, assuming I might find something light-hearted, but when I found it (yes, I kept going straight past it) It was DEAD!

Back at AR, the General section used to be one of the most enjoyed sections by members.

Perhaps sections should be listed in order of popularity?

Hi Bluducky,

Nice to see you back here again.  Not to worry, people can email you, either through the board, or PM, but they can't see your email, that is private if you choose it to be.

As for moving General & Misc. up, well there is a sort of order to the board already that follow:

Atlantis>>Ancient Cultures & Mysteries>>the Occult>>>Religion>>the Arts>>Science>>>Space>>>Writing & Art

We can't move it up, because, as you see, it really wouldn't fit. It's sort of an academic curriculum, designed for the educators and students here.

However, we could move it down, to above writing & art to give it more visibility.  Our art  & writing sections (at the bottom of the page) are some of the most popular sections here, mostly due to members like Unknown and Cleasterwood posting their writings. Most other forums have General & Misc. at the bottom of the page anyway.  I agree, our General & MIsc. section should be livened up a bit, but if you take a look back at the one at AR, it isn't quite what it used to be either.  People tend to liven up a section, so if you have any ideas how to do that, by all means, feel free.

If you see any other category you think should be added, by all means, let me know.

Peace,

Veronica

Title: Re: Problems
Post by: Bianca on March 28, 2007, 08:39:11 am

Veronica

I still think that there ought to be an addition to the EGYPT section.   As Religion/
Myth was so important in their lives, I think a subsection for that should be added,
so that people who wish to do so may discuss the gods of their Pantheon, the
Book of the Dead and the like.

Also a section could be added <Akhanaten/Amarna>, which is being discussed
more and more, given its relation to Moses, especially.

Thank you for really trying to keep everyone happy.  As some people might say:

GOOD JOB!.......

Love and Peace,
Bianca

DDDnD3D, actually that's a problem with the "cookies" placed in your browser, which expire after an hour (if you log in at the top of the page) or two hours (if you log in at the bottom.  You can set them for "all day" and forever" but I've never done that myself, so I'm not sure how it works.

My advice, if you think you've been at the forum for over an hour, would be to "select" and "copy" before you post a message.  If you get the error message, all is not lost, though, you just have to hit the back button to get back to your original post before you sent it, it should still be there.

Title: Re: Problems
Post by: Europa on May 08, 2007, 01:15:52 pm
Last night forum server 2 went down for a few hours, thus making forum visits impossible. Technical difficulties happen with every forum, most of the time unforeseen, so that is nothing new.  I'd like to stress that the help and support we get from the owner of this forum is terrific.  There are problems, but they are usually solved quickly.

However, since we are primarily a research oriented forum, we decided it best to have a "back-up plan," so as there is less chance that the research we are doing here will be lost.

Therefore, we have decided to open up a second, back-up forum on server three, with all the same categories that this one has, and, eventually, many of the important research-oriented posts copied and moved over there as well.  This forum will also serve as a place to go if or when this one goes around again, with much of the work we have already done moved over there for us to continue doing working on it.

This one will still serve as the main forum, as I said, the other one will serve as simply a "back-up plan," a place to go should we have another emergency.

It is a big job creating a forum, so it will be a bit before we will be ready to give out the web address to everyone.  Everyone who is an active member over here will be invited over there as well.

Rather than ask everyone to re-register again, we'll simply move the membership list over there and tell everyone when it's ready. Of course, you can change your password to anything you like once you get it.

People will be welcome to post in either forum, of course, but, just to reiterate, while this one will still be our main forum, the other forum will serve as only sort of insurance policy.

All the best,

Europa

Europa,

"Dummy" here wants to know if this forum will stay the same,
or do we have to go there if we want to refer to a past part.

In other words, will the new one be just a DUPLICATE?

Thank you,
B

Title: Re: Problems
Post by: Europa on May 09, 2007, 12:43:05 am
This forum will stay the same, Bianca, with the exception of maybe changing the colors.  The other forum will simply be a duplicate with some of our research stored there - your own work on Atlantis, for instance and the research of others, as well as Unknown's artwork and writing, other things.  It should be seen as a "back-up," a place that others know they can go if this forum is having technical problems.

I don't imagine that to be often, but it is nice to have a back-up plan, on a different server.

Europa,

Since I came back from my "enforced" vacation, I have noticed that
when I am typing something for a long time and leave my keyboard
for even five minutes, when I come back, I find myself totally "off-
line".

At first I thought it was my new computer, but I found that when I
left any other site (on purpose) the same way, that did not happen.

Today I started a new posting and it is happening all over again.

Any opinion?
B

Hi Bianca,

The "cookies" in your browser expire after about an hour if you log in at the top of the page.

If you log in at the bottom of the page, Brooke fixed it so they don't expire for two hours (you'll notice that it says 120 minutes).

Hope that helps.

Bianca,

I just set that poll for "allow user to change vote."  It could be that you voted in it once before and forgot, but, in any event, you should be able to vote in "Where was Atlantis?" now.

As for why, "polls," isn't appearing, it is in the last section of the Atlantis category, just after "Atlantis in the Media."  Did you collapse the Atlantis category?

Title: Re: Problems

Chronos.

Didn't the POLLS category used to be all by itself, or am I 'losing it'?

Anyway, thanks.  I voted in "Where was Atlantis?" and a bunch of
other stuff.

If so, where is it now?

Title: Re: Problems
Post by: Sun Goddess on May 10, 2007, 11:01:34 pm
Hi Bianca,

Yes, you are right, there used to be a delete button, but we got rid of it. The reason?  Not only can someone delete their own posts, but whole topics that they started, along with anyone else's posts that used to be in the topic as well.

One member from Atlantis Rising used to do that all the time and it got to be quite a problem - any topic she started she would also get rid of it whenever the mood struck her, along with everyone else's work therein as well.

When that began to happen here, we decided to learn from past mistakes.

You can still change or delete what you have written by hitting the button, "modify."

Sun Goddess:

Just getting out of the post without clicking on "SAVE" or anything does not
work for me.  As I am just learning to 'cut and paste', I found that the only
way I could delete a post was by BACKSPACING - don't try that on FOUR LONG
POSTS -------

Anyway, now I find that I can't backspace on something and I need some help.

I posted something on ATLANTIS IN THE NEW AGE under CHANNELING that has
six pages.  Well, the site would not allow me to post more than the FIRST page.
So, I thought I would start a new topic and try again.  No dice.....

I outfoxed them and printed out the rest of the article, so I can type the rest.

Would someone please delete in CHANNELING & ATLANTIS Michael Scallion's
first page.

Make sure you leave [ATLANTIS - Gordon Michael Scallion] alone, as that's where
I plan to continue the article.

Thank you.

Hi Bianca,

The system edits posts if they are too long.  We took the word limit off, but it does it anyway. Really long posts are best split off into sections.

As for deleting unwanted material, heaven forbid that you need to backspace on all of it!  Best thing to do is click on the "body" of the post, a menu will come up, hit "select all," then "cut."

Hope that helps.

Europa

Title: Re: Problems
Post by: Bianca on August 02, 2007, 09:13:05 pm

Europa,

I'm afraid I am not using the right terminology:

I was copying from Crystalinks, everything was fine, then all of a sudden I couldn't print what I had
copied anymore.  I thought something had gone wrong with my keyboard or my computer.  So, I
cleaned my keyboard, tried the electrical connections etc.  Still it wasn't working, so I called Dell,
who sold me my computer.  They ran a check and nothing was wrong, but I still couldn't post my
copied material here, while I could in my Yahoo e-mail.  So, the Dell people said it must be from this
end.

In fact a couple of hours later, everything was fine.  As a matter of fact, I just finished copying
the material.

Thank you,
b

Hmm, that's very odd.  I have had that happen before, though.  I used to have "Google Toolbar" installed on my computer.  It conflicted with an anti-virus program that I also had and woud frequently result in the same type of reaction. Once I uninstalled Google Toolbar, things were fine again.

The best solutution I can think of is to exit out of your browser, then go back in again and try it all over again.  Sometimes computer run out of memory and that tends to give it an instant boost.

Did anyone else experience any technical problems today? I had some problems myself, getting around in the afternoon, but I thought it was just the computer I was using.

Are we having an overload problem?  I've been trying to get on-line, and I've tried everything I could think of, and only got on now after trying for about half an hour.  I tried thru Google, and then tried to link thru there on some of the titles but nothing.  I tried to link thru the e-mail notifications that come when someone has posted in a subject I'm interested, but it kept say "no input file specified".  I did finally link thru a title after typing atlantisonline.smfforfree2.com in Google.

Hi everyone,

The forum was down for about three hours today.  Sometimes the server we are on (server 2) gets overloaded, and it affects all the forums that are on it, not just this one.  Fortunately, the owner is around pretty often and usually manages to fix these problems fairly quickly.

While we were having problems, I checked our back up forum and it was doing fine, though.  It is on server 3, and that was apparently not affected.  It's nearly identical to this one, and anyone is welcome to post there when we are having difficulties.

I will send a few of you the address who are here during the day, anyone else is welcome to email me and I will give it to them, too.  A word of caution, though, we haven't gotten the chance to work on it as much as we have this one, though, so there aren't anywhere near as many posts or members.  Some of the categories also haven't been updated either, although they will be eventually.  The idea behind it is to simply have a place to go and continue our research when the main forum is having problems. This forum will, of course, still be our major focus.

All the best,

Europa

I just simplified the search engine so the results will come up faster, however, I didn't see any thread for Dogons on the forum.  I actually don't remember one ever started and am here most days.  Maybe one was never started after all.

I thought I had seen one.  I wanted to make sure I didn't duplicate, there is enough
of that already.

Hi Bianca,

There is some duplication in the forum!  Some people are doing research related to papers they are working on in college, they get graded on them, which is why they don't simply add to an old topic.

I look forward to reading what you have to say on the Dogons!  From what I know of them, they were a people very in touch with the stars.

All the best,

Europa

 :)  ADMINISTRATERS:

Is there a way of marking my favorite threads so I can find them easier,(without marking them as "unread")?  I find myself always going back to "replies to my posts", to read up on my favorite topics.  But when I don't have anything to reply, they disappear.

Then when I go to look for them on the main board, there are so many, that I can't remember where they were, LOL.  I end up going to members and clicking on myself to show my own posts, just to find the spot I was looking for.

Maybe there's a easier way to do this, and I'm just clueless, LOL!  :P

P.S.  If this question has been covered before, then please excuse my ignorance.

Hmm, I wish I could find some way to help you on that, mdsungate, but I just went through the forum software and didn't see anyway to add an option that might help you with that.

You can click on your name wherever you see it, and it takes you immediately to your profile, though (without going through the whole memberlist), then you can, of course, select, "show the most recent posts of this user."  Then, you can see a list of your most recent posts in the topics you have posted in.  Not sure if that helps you out anymore, but it is the quickest way I can think of.

All the best,

Europa

Congratulations to everyone!!  Everyone here has played their part in making Atlantis Online a success.  I think that the Tesla thread is in one of the science forums.

On the bright side, I think we are about all done adding forums, with the possible exception of some tweaking here and there.

The forum tree sort of was planned like this:

Announcements
^
Atlantis
^
Ancient Cultures
^
Ancient Mysteries
^
Religion
^
Science
^
Environment
^
the Arts
^
General
^
Creative

Once you have the basic layout down, you at least know what section may have what.

All the best,

Europa

I love the discussions that we have all shared here and I hope that they will continue to encourage the imaginations of everyone in the months/years ahead.

Thinking back, I've been talking to most of you for a few years now and there has never been the mention of a convention, or gathing.
Not important though. I love you all the same, and I'm glad I've had the chance to make your aquaintences.

Well, Rockesence, at least you got to travel the Greek Isles when you were young, LOL.

Perhaps we are all a litte to physically separated for an actual physical gathering.  But maybe there's a cyber space version we could all participate in, (I mean besides this great one, LOL).

My kids play a computer game called the Sims, and they create characters with houses and pick out furniture.  Where's our resident computer geek to help us create a cyber space "party"?  I've seen things like "Elf" yourself where your picture is placed on an Elf like annimation of yourself and it dances around.  It's hilarious!

Maybe there's a way to have a cyberspace party or convention?

This fanatical obsessive addictive personality has now reached 7,400 posts.

SEVEN THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED

Is there a doctor in the house ?

go to GET-A-LIFE-DOT-COM"

I am truly disgusted that this attack was leveled on a kind and generous lady like Bianca, that someone would be so rude, so uncouth as to attack a senior citzen confined to a wheelchair. That Bianca's enormous and profound contributions to this site were used in an outrageous attack against her.

Bianca's post's are almost entirely substantive and from published sources, does anyone here think that this site would be anywhere near as successful or informative without her.

She has e-mailed me that she is leaving. Mainly because she does not need to be harassed, and attacked personally.

It is my considered opinion that all personal attacks are out of line. If you cannot argue your case on it's merits then you shouldn't be allowed to spew hateful comments ad naseum.

I will be sorry to see Bianca go, and the forum will certainly be diminished by her absence.

I hope all of you who know and respect Bianca the way I do, will speak out on this.

Title: Re: Problems

I totally agree with the sentiments expressed above.  People should not be harrassed simply because their views or methods differ from another's. And Bianca has done more than anyone here to make this site the success that it is.

Majeston is no longer with us and has been banned from the forum.

It wasn't my first choice as we have known him for quite some time, and know that he has both good and bad in him.  However he was warned earlier about personal attacks and did not seem to want to listen.

A little disagreement here and there is fine, in fact, it wouldn't be much of a forum if we did not have some differences.

However, blatant personal attacks and insults are straight out of line.  Since I believe he can still post at Atlantis Rising if he wishes, he still has a means to express himself if he wishes.

Hopefully, things will return to normal around here, as days like this are not a good usage of our time.

Peace,

Veronica

I totally agree with this also.  I was getting a little tired of the insulting attitude myself.

Oh, guys, this is too much.....

After we "splintered" from AR, someone over there (Brig, I think) stated that we were a
"MUTUAL ADMIRATION SOCIETY".

One could say that, we ALL  came here with great enthusiasm, determined to make this
site a great success.

                                              W E   D I D

Part of that success is the fact that, even though we are of the same mind, we are so
varied in our backgrounds and interests.  But we made that work to our advantage.

Each according to our own schedules and obligations.  Me, I am at a stage in life where I can do (finally) what I darn well want to with my time.....

So I choose to be here.  You all must be aware there are all sorts of things available to senior
citizens; also that I am interested in al lot of things (too many, maybe).

But this is where I want to be at this point in time.  True, part of me is doing it because I would
like to leave "a little bit of me for posterity", a sort of legacy for those who come after.

I am not being morbid.  I am 70 years old, after all........

But the BASIC reason is because all of YOU are part of it, my friends, my other family......

So, yes, Brig, we are a MUTUAL ADMIRATION SOCIETY!!!

Oh, why beat around the bush?  I am Italian, after all, and I am expected to be emotional
and mushy!!!

Oh, guys, I LOVE YOU ALL, too.  Life wouldn't be the same without you, for me either!!!

Oh, one more thing:

Given the size of the Forum, I think it is too hard for the Mods to keep track of things.

So, it's up to us to be on guard for SCHOOLYARD BULLIES.

I never was aware of an Absonite during the short time I was at AR.  So, when I was
warned here about him, I never connected him with Majeston.

After my first encounter with him here a few months ago, I made it my business to re-
search the AR archives.

WHAT I FOUND THERE WAS MORE THAN APPALLING - IT WAS BEYOND THE PALE.

Let's make sure we don't let this hapen again!

Love and hugs,
b

I'm not sure who all the Atlantis Online moderators are, but I would like to thank them for keeping all of the troublemakers and trolls at AR from contaminating this group.  If the moderators hadn't done their job, we would have ended up like AR is today--dead, dead, dead!

Title: Re: Problems

That is very true Tom.  When I told my husband what Majeston had said to me, he said "Leave that forum".  If we all left, it would certainly die, and it's too good to let that happen.  Kudos to the admin for being fair but firm.

On behalf of all the mods here, I thank you all!

It is unpleasant banning people from a forum, but, as we see, some people do deserve it.  Maybe if they had banned more of the troublemakers at AR, people wouldn't have left there in droves.

Important for everyone to realize, if you have a problem with something going on here, give us a chance to straighten it out first.

Remember, people, the idea behind this forum is for it to be your forum, where members have more of a say in what is going on, not less. Democracy rules!

All the best,

Europa

JUST FOR THE RECORD:

Title: Re: Problems

Hi Rockessence,

I actually didn't see any button that allows you to do that.  If you go into your profile, under "look & layout preferences," it gives you the options of ignoring messages from certain people.  You can also stop seeing replies to your posts, didn't see anything about ignoring anyone, though.

Certain people tend to go around certain topics, though. Maybe it would be best to just stay clear of the topics they tend to post in?

Happy Friday, everybody!!!

In regaurds to posts that get Ugly, I was advised by a good friend recently to avoid a certain catagory of topics. In light of the subject matters, I think I'm just going to leave them alone as well.
I would also like to apologize to anyone who might have found my responces to the republicans there, offensive. I am passionate about certain things and I tend to be extreme when confronted with people who knowingly try to hurt others.......

However, I'm no better in the same sence because I am contributing to an unwinnable war by fighting in it.
Again, my apologies and I promice to behave from now on.  ;)

Although, I would like to advise the Admin., to reveiw "General & Misc".....
I'm sure that once you all have, you'll see why I was so angry with a select few there that enjoy dumping gas on open flames.......

On that note, I will discontinue going back into those threads to avoid any further confrontations.

On a happier note, I have been researching something more interesting then bashing republicans.
I may be posting more information on alternative energy production soon. Joe Newman, John Hutchison, Albert Einstein and many of our favorites had some less popular ideas that until recently weren't publically
noted.

MODS,

I have been having a real hard time posting, for a while, now.

It takes forever for a page to load and I am lucky if it doesn't 'drop' to another page or disappear
altogether.  When you post as much as I do, that can be really a great vexation and waste of time.

I have been driving the people at Dell crazy with my problems and they can't find anything wrong
with my machine.  As a matter of fact, AO is the only place I have a problem with....

Well, it seems that Qoais also encountered the same problem I did on Sunday.  See Bianca thread.

Today and last night, I am getting this:

Connection Problems

Sorry, SMF For Free was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.

SMF For Free Support forums located at

As poorly lacking in 'tech savvy' as I am, even I can figure out that all the problems I have been having seem to be from our greatly increased traffic.

Can you help?

Hi Bianca,

That's a server problem and the owner has to fix it, we don't have the ability to do so!  I'll look into the general tech forum tonight and see if they are onto it and, if so, how long it will be before it's taken care of.

In the meantime, I adjusted your look and layout preferences so you can post faster.

Sorry for the glitch, people.

Hi Europa,

I have been very frustrated about how slow AO has been over the past few weeks.  Can you give the rest of us hints about how to make it work faster?  Do you suppose it has anything to do with the recent changes that were made.  The slowness happened around the same time.

Title: Re: Problems
Post by: Europa on July 23, 2008, 03:18:48 pm
Hi Tom,

The page takes an awful long time to load because we have so many forums on it.  The way to get around quickest is to use the little white box that says "Go" on it and then go to the forum you want.  You can move around within seconds if you use that box!

Having said that, we probably will be pairing down some of the stuff we added to the page, but the problem that Bianca was referring to is actually related to the server that AO is on, not AO itself.  There is a "glitch" that happens sometime.

I adjusted your look and layout preferences like I just did Bianca's, so hopefully you can post faster!

If either of you wants to let me know if the forum was any faster this afternoon, by all means let me know!  My connection during the day is a DSL one, but our entire server is pretty slow, so it has always been pretty slow for me!

All the best,

Europa

Title: Re: Problems
Post by: Tom Hebert on July 23, 2008, 05:10:51 pm
It seems to work a little faster.  Thanks, Europa.

P.S.  I could not find a "Go" box, but I assume you mean the white box that says "Search."  That would work, I suppose if I had a favorite forum.   ;)

What I normally do is use the Unread or Recent option.

Title: Re: Problems
Post by: Bianca on July 23, 2008, 09:22:58 pm

Thank you, Europa!

The 'quick reply' works fine for that particular post, yes.  Unfortunately it's hard to use when
posting an article with a heading.  I have been having trouble with that too.  I center the title
and when I come back to post more, the title is always off center.  So, I recenter it, but it's
off again when done....

A lot of the 'blinking and twitching' has eased up a bit too.

I agree with Tom that the problems started with the new changes or thereabouts.

Like Tom, I don't know where the GO box is.

I do have a suggestion that might help:

Eliminate the addendum at the bottom of the page.  Now that Chronos has given me his list,
I add a link to it after I post 'Today in History'.  It is much better than the one on the bottom
of the page.  Plus it seems not too many people beside me are using the link to the stories.
Many of us were already using Archaeology News, anyway.

Plus, it really s----s me up royally, when I am posting a lot.  It sets off the page and I have to wait
again so that I can go back to the top (to go to my last post on the bottom), then I have to wait
again so I can click on 'go down', then I have to wait to go down.....Please get rid of it and see what happens, who knows.....?

Thank you for all you do!

Hugs,
b

I would like to echo what Bianca said.  Please eliminate the stuff that was added to the bottom of each page.  It serves no practical purpose and is a big distraction.

Title: Re: Problems
Post by: Bianca on July 23, 2008, 10:34:17 pm

Europa,

Tonight was probably the worst it's ever been.  From 7 pm (Eastern) on I have only been able to
post a small fraction of what I usually do in the same amount of time.  It has been really an agoniz-
ing wait between frames.

Qoais was complaining in her thread that her post had disappeared.

God(dess), I hope nothing goes wrong.  I'd really hate to lose some stuff I really put a lot of research
in, like the Astrology section.  The rest I posted is child's play compared to that one.

Hugs,
b

Bianca, what interent browser are you using, do you know?

The "go" button is beneath the body of the messages, currently, it should look like this:

=>Messages    go

See it?

Title: Re: Problems
Post by: Bianca on July 23, 2008, 11:21:38 pm

No on both questions.

Server is like Earthlink, Verizon etc., right?

If so, Verizon.

By GO, do you mean the arrow?

Title: Re: Problems
Post by: Europa on July 23, 2008, 11:25:33 pm
Sure!  There you have it, using that should be able to make moving around easier, you can get to any forum really quickly.

I made some fine tuning in the forum and got rid of some stuff, hopefully it works better tomorrow!

The problems that happened during the afternoon weren't related to the widgets, though.  We seem to have some sever problems at mid-day when it is busiest and have for months.

All the best,

Europa

It's working a lot better, Europa.

In case you didn't read me above,

My server is Verizon.

Title: Re: Problems
Post by: Bianca on July 23, 2008, 11:58:32 pm

Europa,

I have been busy since my last post above, which youdidn't read, BTW.

Things were going fine, then they went back the way they were.  Before I got too
panicky, I realized that you had just ADDED some stuff to the BOTTOM  of the page.

THAT'S BEEN THE TROUBLE.

Take it off, that's what's slowing things down.

Title: Re: Problems
Post by: Tom Hebert on July 24, 2008, 05:13:01 am
Hi Europa,

Thank you for removing at least some of the fluff at the bottom.  There was a marked improvement in the speed!!!

P.S.  I finally found the "Go" button.  As I explained earlier, it does help in my situation, but at least I know it's there.  ;)

Good morning!

Boy, I was afraid to log on this morning.  Right after my post at 12:58 am, I 'lost' you
and wasn't able to access AO anymore.  So I went to bed....

I see some of the 'stuff' on the bottom is gone.  I am going to post some and I'll let you
know how the new set up holds up.

At last!  I was sweating bullets this morning as I couldn't access at all.  Kept getting a notice that Service was Unavailable!

I don't know anything about how forums work on-line but would it help if we all cleaned out our mail boxes?

Title: Re: Problems
Post by: Brooke on July 24, 2008, 12:02:18 pm
Hi all!

The server had a power failure last night, which is why the forum was down for so many hours. It has also been down for part of the morning, too!  I don't know what's going on, but it has nothing to do with mailboxes or what's on the front page of the forum.

Bianca, the server is sort of like a computer that this forum (and hundreds of other forums for SMF) sit on, which is manned by the owner and founder of the website.  We have nothing to do with the server, can't see it, can't monkey around with it when it is screwed up and simply have to wait for the techs to take care of any issues with it. Lately, it has been VERY tempermental and has been screwing up a lot. That has been a BIG cause for concern.

As for the widgets, we paired down all but the ones that we really need - BBC & National Geographic, so hopefully the forum page loads a bit faster. The only way to make the page load quickly all the time would be to cut down on the number of forums on the page, which were are loathe to do cause a lot of them have been requested by people and are added to pretty regularly.

We are probably going to open another Atlantis forum pretty soon so you have a place to post when this one is down. It looks like it will be a neccessity! We will post the address here when it's available, which will be in a day or two. Other than that, I guess the only thing to do is be patient, people.

Have a good day, all!  And sorry about the problems!  It has been frustrating to us, too!

Brooke

Sorry about the problems, everyone, it seems that one of the other forums on this server was "hacked" and has caused all sorts of slowdowns for other forums on the same server, like ours. Techs worked on the problem last night and will continue to work on it until it is righted.

Happy Monday, everybody, and go Team USA in the Olympics!!!!  :D

This week I downloaded the Beta version of Internet Explorer 8.  Now I have to log into Atlantis Online several times a day even though I check to "stay logged in."  I never had this problem with Version 7 and am thinking about reinstalling it.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Title: Re: Problems

Hi Tom!

I downloaded 8 recently, too, and I hate it. I think there is a way wherein the browser itself allows you to remember your password, but I can't remember how to get there!

My suggestion would be to go back to 7 as everything is a little screwed up on the new one.

All the best,

Just to let everyone know, when I tried to reinstall Internet Explorer 7 from the Microsoft web page, I got an error message saying they couldn't do it because I already had a later version.  Isn't Microsoft wonderful!  So then I wondered, if I go ahead and uninstall IE 8, how am I going to get back to their website to install IE 7?  Talk about a Catch 22!

I finally downloaded the uninstalled IE 7 to a temporary file, then uninstalled IE 8.  Luckily the operating system apparently remembered IE 7, so I didn't actually have to install the package that I had downloaded.

Whew!  My browser works fine now, and I feel like I have regained control of my life. I hope this post may help some of you to avoid what I went through.

Tom

Mods,

I have been having an awful time in the last couple of days by the ads of CIRCUIT CITY  and
FIREDOG not only spamming my posts, but they are also making it very hard to get them out
of the way.  This evening the situation is particularly 'ferocious'......

I am at present copying a very extensive overview of the Renaissance (no great fun, ah!) and
this is getting beyond annoying.

Any help will be appreciated.

Hey Bianca!

That sounds like the pits!  Unfortunately, we don't have anything to do with the ads here, though, and can't control them.  The owner of the site sells ad space to lots of companies.  If we DID have something to do with them, the first thing I'd do is get all those pro-McCain/anti-Obama ads off of there!

You guys need to watch the Money Masters on Google video, sheesh I posted it enough.

Recessions to economies is what loosing 4 pints of blood would be to a human being.  If the Federal Reserve would stop with the adjustable rate loans and demanding everything be paid back by all sectors of society all at one time recessions would be near non-existent.

I am still having the same problems as above.  Very tough when I am in the middle of

Tonight I've been trying since about 7PM (eastern)

I can access any other site with no problems whatsoever.

Then a box appears asking to search for problems.  It comes back every time: "no problems".....
Then I am asked to report it and that seems to be the end of it.  It has improved nothing.....

Any idea why?

It's liberanomic policies on CEOs and Unions alike that put them where they are.

That and our fractional reserve banking system designed to bankrupt us.

Perhaps perks are involved. However, the auto industry is going under because of them too.
I think they create more of a catch 22.

Title: Re: Problems
Post by: Allison on January 01, 2009, 04:13:24 pm
That's actually a MYTH, Herefornow.  There are no union auto workers making 70 bucks an hour!  To get that number, the right wingers had to factor in pensions and retirements.  Most make between 14 bucks an d 20 bucks an hour.

The reason why the car market tanked is because the banks have frozen up and no one can get credit anymore.  How many people can buy a new car without getting a car loan?  It's the same with the housing industry, too.

Tell me I am hallucinating:

Did we lose

                                                        THE TAROT?

http://atlantisonline.smfforfree2.com/index.php/board,195.0.html

I haven't checked this in a very long time, but I think it got 'lost' during the rearrangement
of this section, unless it got put somewhere else.

It will take me forever to replace all those pictures......

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phew....

OK, I found it under PROPHECY.

Well, if you don't mind, I would hardly classify it as that, it is more of a DIVINING tool and it really
belongs with the rest of 'divinatory arts'

Thank you, Ceneca.

The header now reads:

Arcane, Recondite Practices

"The traditions and ways of the ancients, both forgotten and passed down through time."

Could we please be more specific and replace  " The traditions etc " with:

TAROT
DOWSING
RUNES
CHEIROMANCY
NUMEROLOGY
SCRYING etc.

and/or as many as will fit, so that readers will know they are there.

I have noticed there is a lot of interest in metaphysical subjects, but this section has not received any
traffic at all since our readership has grown so much.

Hi Qoais,

I noticed that, too.  The forum is fine for a few moments, then goes back to being slow again.  That has been going on for months, and it has been happening on all the forums on this server.  Not much we can do about it on this end except just wait for when the owner fixes it.  Hitting "reload" seems to work for me.

Europa,

what works for me is going to my "home" and then returning to AO, if that doesn't
work, I just restart the computer.

It's annoying when I have something to paste and I lose it.

But what the heck, it's for free!
