The X-Files is returning for a six-part series with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson back as Mulder and Scully.

20th Century Fox confirmed production will begin this summer. A broadcast date is yet to be announced.

The show about two FBI agents investigating the supernatural ended in 2002, and fans have always held out hope of a reunion.

• David Duchovny: X-Files reunion is happening

• Gillian Anderson: It's time someone was brave enough to ask me out

The new series will be written by the original creator, Chris Carter. "I think of it as a 13-year commercial break. The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories," he said.

David Duchovny indicated last month that a reunion was on the cards.

"It's almost like going out on a greatest hits tour. It would be a lark. And I think it's going to happen pretty soon," he said.

The X-Files is the latest series to be revived, following the announcement that Twin Peaks is coming back to the small screen.

Gary Newman and Dana Walden, joint chairman of Fox Television, said: "We had the privilege of working with Chris on all nine seasons of The X-Files - one of the most rewarding creative experiences of our careers - and we couldn't be more excited to explore that incredible world with him again.

"The X-Files was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning.

"Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as The X-Files and we're ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they've been waiting for."

The X-Files is set to return to television screens for the first time in 13 years, with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson resuming their roles as Mulder and Scully.

The US broadcaster Fox has confirmed that a six-episode series will begin production in the summer. The broadcast date has yet to be revealed.

The series creator Chris Carter described the show’s absence as “a 13-year commercial break” and added: “The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.”

The six-episode run is shorter than most US TV series, and Fox described the X-Files return as an “event”. Dana Walden and Gary Newman, chair and CEO of Fox Television Group, said: “We had the privilege of working with Chris on all nine seasons of The X-Files – one of the most rewarding creative experiences of our careers – and we couldn’t be more excited to explore that incredible world with him again.

“The X-Files was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture – yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning. Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as The X-Files, and we’re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they’ve been waiting for.”

The original series was cancelled in 2002, although Duchovny and Anderson returned for a feature film, X-Files: I want to Believe, in 2008. Rumours of the show’s return have swirled around the internet for years, and in 2013 Anderson and Duchovny generated much excitement when they hinted during an online discussion that another X-Files film might be in the works.

Such was the on-screen chemistry between FBI investigators Fox Mulder and Dana Scully in their quest to explain the unexplained that Anderson and Duchovny themselves became a story – according to the press at various times during the height of the show’s popularity, they were having an affair, hated each other or both.

This year Anderson told the Guardian’s Simon Hattenstone: “I mean, yes, there were definitely periods when we hated each other … Hate is too strong a word. We didn’t talk for long periods of time. It was intense, and we were both pains in the arse for the other at various times.”

Since the last X-Files series, Anderson has starred in a string of literary adaptations – as Lady Dedlock in Bleak House, Lily Bart in The House of Mirth, Miss Havisham in the BBC’s Great Expectations, and Mrs Castaway in The Crimson Petal and The White – and more recently she played Supt Stella Gibson in murder drama The Fall, which has been recommissioned for a third series set to air next year.

Anderson also received warm reviews for her performance as Blanche in a feted Young Vic revival of Tennessee Williams’s A Streetcar Named Desire.

Duchovny found further success in the US with Californication, which finished a seven-season run last year. This year he published his debut novel, Holy Cow, in which a cow called Elsie, a pig called Shalom and a turkey called Tom escape a farm in upstate New York in search of a better life.

David Lynch has suggested that Twin Peaks may not return to screens as previously announced.

The show's creator spoke to crowds at the opening of the Between Two Worlds exhibition in Brisbane, revealing that there are "complications" surrounding the project.

He added: "I'm not sure at this point if it's happening."

Fan site Welcome to Twin Peaks has suggested that while scripts for the project are finished, contract negotiations haven't been finalized.

Lynch also spoke about season three of Twin Peaks on ABC News show The Mix, saying that it would be "very special" to return to the show.

The Inland Empire director said: "I haven't returned yet and we're still working on the contract, but I love the world of Twin Peaks and I love those characters. And I think it will be very special to go back into that world."

Created by Lynch and Mark Frost, Twin Peaks first aired on ABC for two seasons in 1990. The series starred Kyle MacLachlan as Dale Cooper, an FBI special agent investigating the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee).

The show's revival was announced in October, before Lynch claimed that MacLachlan would be returning to his role.

However, Entertainment Weekly reports that the Showtime project is progressing as expected and will still air in 2016.

First announced in October 2014, the Twin Peaks revival is expected to span nine episodes, with Lynch announced as directing the entire season and also co-writing alongside Mark Frost.

Kyle MacLachlan (Dale Cooper), Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer), Dana Ashbrook (Bobby Briggs) and Catherine E Coulson (The Log Lady) will all reprise their roles.

Showtime president David Nevins previously vowed that the network would not interfere with Frost and Lynch's writing process.

Twin Peaks Documentary Coming To BBC Radio

While we wait for more word on when Twin Peaks will return to TV on Showtime — and hopefully not if, considering some comments over the past few weeks by David Lynch that caused a few nervous moments — we can at least hear more about it on the radio.

BBC Radio, that is, as it’s presenting a documentary about the series that will air on BBC Radio 4 on April 6. Hosted by Danny Leigh, the program will also bring on DJ Rob da Bank to discuss the Twin Peaks soundtrack, filmmaker Richard Ayoade and authors Denise Mina and Andy Burns.

The show will air originally at 4 pm, which is 11 am Eastern time in the US. Fans in the States can listen to the documentary online on the BBC Radio website, and I’m thinking it might be archived there as well.

It’s always good to have the series discussed in a forum like this just to keep the fires properly stoked for next year. BBC stuff is almost universally well done, so this should be an informative and entertaining look at how Twin Peaks continues to influence TV and pop culture in general today.

And after all, isn’t that why we’re looking forward to seeing more of it?

Masi Oka to Return for NBC’s Heroes Reborn

Masi Oka

NBC has announced another casting addition to the upcoming “Heroes Reborn” as Masi Oka will reprise his Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated role as Hiro Nakamura for a guest-starring arc in the series.

“I’m excited to return to my ‘Heroes’ roots,” said Oka. “Hiro Nakamura was such an inspirational role to play, and I’m hoping the fans will enjoy seeing him back on TV.”

“We are thrilled to have Masi back in the ‘Heroes’ family,” said creator/executive producer Tim Kring. “The character of Hiro Nakamura was such a huge part of the first series’ success, and a gigantic fan favorite. We felt the fans would really love seeing him back in action again.”

Oka joins a cast that will feature returning cast member Jack Coleman and newcomers Zachary Levi, Ryan Guzman, Robbie Kay, Danika Yarosh, Judith Shekoni, Kiki Sukezane, Henry Zebrowski and Gatlin Green.

“Heroes Reborn” will debut this year as a limited series reboot of the popular show. The original series chronicled the life-changing stories of a series of unrelated ordinary people who discovered they had superhuman abilities. As the saga unfolded, they learned they were part of a grand plan that brought them together to change the world.

Prior to the debut of “Heroes Reborn” this fall, NBC is expected to launch a digital series that will introduce the characters and new storylines. Plot details for the new episodes have yet to be disclosed, but the series is said to follow a new stand-alone story arc.

“Heroes” creator Tim Kring is executive producing with James Middleton and Peter Elkoff. Matt Shakman is directing the opening episode. You can watch the teaser that debuted during the Super Bowl using the player below.

Chris Carter and David Duchovny on the Return of The X-Files
SuperHeroHype Mar 28, 2015

the x-files

“Twin Peaks,” “Coach,” and “The X-Files.” All our favorite shows are coming back, the latter of which always seemed to make the most sense. After all, “The X-Files” affords endless possibilities and unexplainable mysteries for Scully & Mulder to probe. Now that their return is official, just what can viewers and fans expect? Series creator Chris Carter and star David Duchovny have spoken out a bit, teasing heavily but revealing a bit about returning players, where the revival will stand and the nature of the episodes.

Calling it a mix of mythology and standalone episodes, Chris Carter discussed the impending “X-Files” resurrection with X-Files News. Hitting a series of bullets, Carter says the six-episode event will be present-set, explaining, “We’re going to tell X-Files the way that we’ve always told them; we will of course set them in the time and place that they exist. We’re telling contemporary stories about contemporary situations, true to Mulder and Scully’s characters and their relationship and the passage of time.”

Putting the series in the present seems to leave “X-Files” news with questions about 2012 and ‘colonization.’ Carter says, “I’ve thought about that. I don’t know exactly how I’m going to address it, in a big way, a mild way, a modern way, a mention or a plot point. And of course you can’t avoid to deal with the William (arc) in some way or another.”

On the cast and crew tip meanwhile, many will be excited to hear Carter herald the return of Glen Morgan and James Wong, describing Morgan as being in a producing position and saying, “We’ve lured Darin Morgan and Jim Wong, we’re very excited about that and we’re working on the rest.” As for cast, he teases, “I have ideas for everyone.”

Duchovny also talked to the NY Times and was asked whether the new “X-Files” will be serialized or just like a collection of movies of the week. “We’re gonna do both. I’m pretty sure it’s gonna begin and end with the mythology. But I really don’t know,” he said.

Production on “The X-Files” event series is set to begin this summer in Vancouver.

Twin Peaks revival: Showtime won't interfere with David Lynch

Showtime president David Nevins has vowed that the network will not interfere with Mark Frost and David Lynch's writing process on Twin Peaks.

The critically-acclaimed series will return to television in 2016 after a 25-year hiatus, with lead actor Kyle MacLachlan reprising his role as FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper.

Nevins told reporters at the TCA press tour earlier this week that Frost and Lynch will have creative freedom in crafting the storyline for season three.

"[We'll be] more or less writing checks and leaving them alone. It's David's show, it's Mark's show, I will be the grateful recipient of it," the executive said.

He went on to say: "I will say that they have been very specific in promising closure, and that's exciting."

Nevins also said during his TCAs appearance that he practically "begged" Lynch to agree to direct all nine episodes of the new season.

Twin Peaks co-creator Mark Frost is writing a new book that will bridge the gap between the original series and the upcoming Showtime revival.

Flatiron Books has announced that it will publish The Secret Lives of Twin Peaks in late 2015 as part of the run-up to new episodes premiering in 2016.

Frost's book will offer key details on what has happened to the residents of Twin Peaks over the last 25 years.

The Secret Lives of Twin Peaks will also explore the supernatural elements from the original series.

"This has long been a dream project of mine that will bring a whole other aspect of the world of Twin Peaks to life, for old fans and new," Frost said in a statement.

"I couldn't be more thrilled."

A previous Twin Peaks spinoff book titled The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer, written by David Lynch's daughter Jennider, was released between the show's first and second seasons in 1990.

Mark Frost's brother Scott Frost wrote The Autobiography of FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper: My Life, My Tapes - ostensibly a transcription of Cooper's dictaphone recordings and released in 1991.

Frost and David Lynch are beginning work on an all-new string of nine episodes to premiere in 2016.

The revived series was announced by Showtime on October 6, days after Frost and Lynch had fuelled rumors about the show's future on social media.

Twin Peaks co-creator David Lynch has confirmed that Kyle MacLachlan will return for the revived third season.

MacLachlan hinted that he would be reprising his role as FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper shortly after Lynch and Mark Frost announced that they will revive the show in 2016.

Lynch offered solid confirmation of MacLachlan's involvement in the new season of Twin Peaks on Twitter today (January 12).

"Welcome back to #TwinPeaks Special Agent Dale Cooper! @Kyle_MacLachlan returns in '16 on @SHO_Network #damnfinecoffee," Lynch tweeted.

The writer-director also released a picture of MacLachlan in a new version of Dale Cooper's famous black suit.

MacLachlan appeared on stage during Showtime's presentation at the TCA press tour today (January 12) to celebrate Twin Peaks's comeback.

"I'm very excited to return to the strange and wonderful world of Twin Peaks," he told reporters, adding: "May the forest be with you."

Showtime president David Nevins later promised those in attendance at the TCAs that Twin Peaks will deliver "closure" on lingering plot points.

"From what I've seen, I think this going to live up to expectations - and then some," Nevins teased.

Nevins added that he was "kind of begging" Frost and Lynch to revisit Twin Peaks prior to greenlighting the new season.

"It felt like only way you could do it is to have David committing to directing all of them and that's what I was begging for," the executive admitted.

"[Twin Peaks is] something they've been toying with. And for David, 25 years was the magic number. There's a reference in original, 'I'll see you in 25 years'."

MacLachlan is the first original cast member to be confirmed to return for the Showtime season, although Richard Beymer, Sheryl Lee, Mädchen Amick and Peggy Lipton have all hinted at involvement.

Joan Chen has also indicated that she would like to revisit her devious Twin Peaks character Josie Packard, although she denied being directly contacted.

Frost will bridge the 25-year gap between the end of Twin Peaks and the third season with an upcoming novel called The Secret Lives of Twin Peaks.

The writer recently hinted that he would like to bring back several viewer-favorite Twin Peaks characters, and has also refused to rule out a potential fourth season.

The rumors were true, Twin Peaks is coming back to TV with nine brand new episodes.

Below is all the information we know so far. We've started with Mark Frost's wide-ranging interviews with TVLine and Deadline, added some info from Vulture's fine phonearound, and had a sniff around the rest of the web.

Twin Peaks: Tube Talk Gold
Twin Peaks: See the cast of cult mystery series then and now

We'll be adding more facts to this article as they arrive over the coming weeks and months.

1. Twin Peaks will return in 2016
"I'll see you again in 25 years," Laura Palmer promised in the Red Room. Coincidence? "When you see it, you'll know," says Frost.

When exactly? Mid-2016 seems likely, with Lynch telling the BBC in December 2014 that the return was "a year and a half" away. He added to The Guardian: "We're not able to even get started because the contracts haven't been signed."

2. It will air on Showtime
"Showtime was the first and only [network] we spoke to about this... they loved the show," Frost adds. The network has already set up an official website for the series.

3. It's a proper sequel
"It is not a remake. The story continues. The seeds of where we go were planted where we've been."

Mark Frost will write a book called The Secret Lives of Twin Peaks, bridging the gap between then and now.

"This has long been a dream project of mine that will bring a whole other aspect of the world of Twin Peaks to life, for old fans and new," Frost said.

David Lynch and a few of the stars from Twin Peaks turned out for the cult series' Entire Mystery Blu-Ray premiere at the Vista Theatre in Hollywood earlier this week.

This got us seriously thinking... Where are the cast now? What have they done since the series came to its premature end? And - superficially - what do they look like now?

Here's some of what 17 of the cult show's lead stars have been up to since:

Charismatic special agent Dale Cooper, enshrouded in mystery and exuding unadulterated sex appeal in his wake (or was that just us?), was portrayed by actor Kyle MacLachlan.

MacLachlan had previously teamed up with director David Lynch for cult classic Blue Velvet in 1986, and went on to reprise his role in the TV series movie prequel Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me in 1992.

He went on to star in Dutch director Paul Verhoeven's guilty pleasure Showgirls (1995), and appeared in HBO's Sex and the City as Charlotte's first husband Trey MacDougal between 2000-2002.

The star also played Bree Van de Kamp's (played by Marcia Cross) husband Orson Hodge in Desperate Housewives from 2006 to 2012.

Last year, he was cast as Dr Roman Skouras in JJ Abrams' short-lived fantasy drama Believe.

Dependable cowboy-hat donning (and doffing) Sheriff Truman is played by Canadian actor Michael Ontkean. He falls in love with the mysterious and exotic Josie Packard.

Ontkean was known prior to Twin Peaks for his part in '70s ABC crime dramaThe Rookies, and as minor league hockey player Ned Braden in Paul Newman's comedy classic Slap Shot (1977).

He went on to reprise his role in the 1992 movie prequel Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, but his scenes were later deleted.

The actor most recently starred as George Clooney's cousin in the Oscar-winning The Descendants. And we hadn't even realized, until now.

Mädchen Amick stars as vulnerable, high-school drop-out and Double R Diner waitress Shelly Johnson, married to abusive trucker Leo Johnson.

The actress also went on to reprise her role for the TV series movie prequel, and later starred as Carrie Fairchild in CBS soap opera Central Park West during the sole run of 21 episodes in 1995 and 1996.

She later appeared in medical drama ER between 2004 and 2005 as social worker Wendall Meade, and as Sara in Matt LeBlanc's Friends spin-off Joey (2005).

The actress also played Danielle Marchetti in season three of FX legal drama Damages in 2010, and currently stars as Wendy Beauchamp in Lifetime's Witches of East End.

Ashbrook starred in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, and went on to play the recurring role of Rich Rinaldi in teen drama Dawson's Creek between 2002-2003.

Richard Beymer plays the sinister Benjamin Horne who casually recites Shakespearean sonnets on cue, and has a monopoly over Twin Peaks with his ownership of the Great Northern Hotel and the seemingly only department store (/casino/brothel) One Eyed Jacks.

Prior to Twin Peaks, Beymer played Peter in 1959's The Diary of Anne Frank, and Tony in the film adaptation of Broadway musical West Side Story in 1961. He also made numerous guest appearances in Murder, She Wrote between 1987 and 1996.

She also starred as shapeshifting alien Serleena in Men in Black II (2002).

Sherilyn Fenn plays the smouldering and sassy Audrey Horne - intelligent and beautiful daughter of Benjamin Horne, who crushes on Special Agent Cooper.

Fenn starred as Curley's wife in Gary Sinise's Of Mice and Men in 1992, and took the lead role in 1993's steamy (and bizarre) Boxing Helena - the directorial debut of David Lynch's daughter Jennifer Chambers Lynch.

Prior to Twin Peaks, McGill starred in Clint Eastwood's war film Heartbreak Ridge (1986), and played baddie Ed Killifer in Licence to Kill. He also starred in horror flick The People Under The Stairs.

The actor filmed scenes as Ed Hurley for Fire Walk with Me, but they were later deleted.

The actress played Mrs Ross in Seinfeld between 1992 and 1998, starred in Armageddon (1998). She later starred as Lois Henrickson in HBO's Mormon drama Big Love.

Lee returned for the prequel movie Fire Walk With Me in 1992, and went on to star in John Carpenter's bloodthirsty Vampires in 1998.

She also played Ellie Harp in TV high school drama One Tree Hill, and also starred with Jennifer Lawrence in the critically-acclaimed and Oscar-nominated drama Winter's Bone.

David Duchovny Announces Skinner, Smoking Man X-Files Return
Sam Zimmerman Apr 01, 2015

the x-files

Now that the “X-Files” revival is real-deal, its momentum has not let up. On the heels of Chris Carter’s comments that he’d like to bring everyone possible back, star David Duchovny revealed on David Letterman that intent just might come to fruition.

Appearing on “The Late Show,” Duchovny spoke to “The X-Files'” six-episode event return. Asked if original cast will be back, he says, “There’s Gillian and I, we’re original. Mitch Pileggi will come back, and the cigarette-smoking man — if that means anything to anyone — will be coming back.” Pileggi, of course, essayed FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner throughout the series’ nine-season run, while The Smoking Man was portrayed by William B. Davis, who was a villainous, rivalrous presence from the beginning.

Less official is TV Wise’s report that both Annabeth Gish and Robert Patrick are slated to return. Both actors were introduced as main characters in “The X-Files'” eighth season, playing special agents Monica Reyes and John Doggett, respectively. The site stresses no deals are in place.

“The X-Files” shoots this summer in Vancouver. Carter has teased the new iteration will be a mix of standalone cases and mythology episodes.

David Lynch Says He’s Left Twin Peaks, Showtime Still Hopeful

Twin Peaks

Following weeks of rumors many hoped were unfounded, Easter Sunday brought breaking news that filmmaker and co-creator David Lynch has left the highly-anticipated “Twin Peaks” revival, scheduled to premiere on Showtime in 2016.

Early on Sunday, Twin Peaks Festival broke the rumor that Showtime had altogether cancelled the impending third season, written by co-creators Lynch and Mark Frost, and to be directed by Lynch. Later, Lynch himself clarified the goings on in a message his Twitter and Facebook accounts. It reads: “Dear Facebook Friends, Showtime did not pull the plug on Twin Peaks. After 1 year and 4 months of negotiations, I left because not enough money was offered to do the script the way I felt it needed to be done. This weekend I started to call actors to let them know I would not be directing. Twin Peaks may still be very much alive at Showtime. I love the world of Twin Peaks and wish things could have worked out differently.”

Showtime has since responded with the following: “We were saddened to read David Lynch’s statement today since we believed we were working towards solutions with David and his reps on the few remaining deal points. SHOWTIME also loves the world of Twin Peaks and we continue to hold out hope that we can bring it back in all its glory with both of its extraordinary creators, David Lynch and Mark Frost, at its helm.”

Apparently scripts for the third season have been written by Frost and Lynch, but if the series does move forward, many would certainly feel it lacking without the filmmaker’s iconic touch – which was supposed to unfold over nine episodes, shot on 35mm no less. Surely, we all hope some sort of agreement can be reached and Lynch returns.

“Twin Peaks” is the seminal, short-lived 1990-91 series by Frost and Lynch which chronicled the titular town and its inhabitants, as well as FBI Agent Dale Cooper, in the wake of the murder of Laura Palmer. “Peaks” was a massively influential cult series, telling a grim yet humorous, supernatural and distinctly Lynch-ian tale that had much of the world asking “Who killed Laura Palmer?” The show’s popularity swiftly declined after said question was answered and the second season seemed to drift aimlessly, before concluding in stunning manner. It was followed by Lynch’s undervalued Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me in 1992.

We know what “Twin Peaks” with all Frost and no Lynch will look like, because that’s what we got in Season 2. Though “Fire…” was also not without its detractors, between the film and the second season of the show, I’d take the movie ten times over. However the genius of the first season, with both Lynch and Frost fully engaged, seems to be everyone’s idea of “Twin Peaks” apex. I suppose with Lynch theoretically having already written the scripts, it will be better than, say, JJ Abrams take on it, but with such a unique opportunity to do something wonderful–why **** it up Showtime?

    I’m not signing the petition.

Of course, it is difficult to say what has really happened. But according to some web sources Lynch got all creative freedom and resources to make season three. I understand that his decision to walk out his own project is purely personal.

Maybe he wanted to give his reward to his meditation center, and that money wasn’t enough, or whatever. As a matter of fact, Lynch has left his associates, business partners, Twin Peaks cast and fans in a very confusing situation. Think about how it must feel to be in Mark Frost’s or Kyle MacLachlan’s position at this very moment. And I bet that those who ever shook hands with Lynch at Showtime are regretting it. Did they want (or deserve) this bad publicity – think again!

Ding! Ding! Ding! It’s time to wake up.

I’m sorry I sound so negative but there’s every reason to. I’ve been waiting for season three as long as you have – since the early 90’s. And it seems it’s going to be a long, long wait…

I’m sorry, but you are mistaken about a few things. Lynch said straight up that showtime did not want to give him enough money to make the show the quality that he envisioned. He wanted to do right by the loyal fans who have waited 25 years.

By saying that he flat walked out on Frost and the returning cast is a total assumption on your part. Frost has made no comment that he left on bad terms. In truth, the fact that he personally called each of them to say that he would no longer be a part of something he didn’t think was being done right, shows that he does care. And that the cast is behind him and speaking out about shows this even further.

And this long, long wait you are talking about… it will be in 2016, regardless of Lynch’s involvement. Showtime has already stated that with or without Lynch, they have the scripts, and will be moving forward.

Frost and Lynch were the heart, soul, and vision of Twin Peaks (Great cast as well). Large companies buy projects, and then do not treat them correctly, usually ending in reboot after reboot and putting projects on the bottom shelf. I don’t want to see this ruined. But it very much looks that way.

But at least some people will get what they need for closure.

David Lynch taught me what movies could be.

His work showed me that film could be visceral, psychological, surreal and disturbing. He showed me that film could be black and white and devoid of logical plots. He gave me the awareness that films could leave images in my mind for weeks, months, years at a time (here’s to you, screeching mutant baby from Eraserhead!).

And then, not long after he helped me discover the limits of what cinema could be, Lynch stopped making movies. His last feature film was 2006’s Inland Empire. I haven’t seen Inland Empire; in 2006, I was still a few years away from discovering Blue Velvet and going on a tear that would define me as a movie-viewer to this day.

All of this is a long, winding way of explaining just why it was so utterly disappointing — and yet entirely predictable — to hear that Lynch was pulling out of Showtime’s rumored Twin Peaks relaunch due to a contract dispute.

The taste of fresh Lynch — his perverse ear for dialogue, his singular way of constructing an iconic shot out of nothing — was so close, but it wouldn’t be modern Lynch if it wasn’t pulled away.

There’s been a sense in recent years that Lynch is tired of filmmaking, which made the Twin Peaks news both exciting and utterly baffling. As much as I — and so many others — miss Lynch, he hasn’t shown any interest in making cinema (or television, or anything that would make auteur-philes salivate) for more than a few years. Why start now?

Instead, Lynch has spent the past several years on a series of bizarre art projects, some seemingly deeply personal, some totally inexplicable.

With a few notable exceptions (his stark, disorienting turn as a late-night TV guru on Louie springs to mind), these projects — though many are Lynchian to their core — haven’t been very good. Let’s look at them now.
The Cleveland Show

From 2010 to 2013, Lynch lent his dry vocal stylings to the role of Gus, the erstwhile bartender who lingered around the edges of this bleakly unfunny Family Guy spin-off. It’s not hard to see what drew Lynch to the part — like so much of his oeuvre, Gus was a weird, anachronistic juxtaposition of the macabre and the small-town idyll (this is giving Seth MacFarlane and company entirely too much credit, but just go along with it). He wore a vest and looked exactly like David Lynch, but he slung beer and palled around with 14-year-olds. He could unzip his skin and claimed to be 117 years old, and he was also the most boring character on a show full of truly dull cartoon men. His presence, however, didn’t manage to make The Cleveland Show watchable.

Dabbling in music

In 2011, Lynch unveiled Crazy Clown Time, an album that wasn’t so much a collection of songs as it was a swirling void of buzzes, tones and modulated vocals. It was nonsensical and nearly unlistenable. The Big Dream in 2013 was less shocking — its crazy, calculated incompetence was humdrum, more than anything. These records felt like a college senior messing around with Pro Tools to **** off his resident adviser. They were rough and unpleasant, but they weren’t truly Lynchian.

Silencio

Again in 2011, Lynch helped design and launch a nightclub in Paris. Its website bills it as “A PLACE FOR EXCHANGES AND ENCOUNTERS THAT CONSIDERS ITSELF THE SUCCESSOR TO SALONS” [sic]. A Yelp review calls it “dark, mysterious, and oh so chic,” which is disappointing, because that’s exactly what you’d expect from a David Lynch-designed nightclub in Paris. Shock us, Davey! Switch it up! Where were the musical saws? The severed clown heads dropping spontaneously from the rafters? The log just kind of sitting in the corner, minding its own business but forcing everybody to be like, “Hey, Pascal, what’s that log doing here?”

Or you could really shock us, Lynch, and make a new TV show or film. Stop the retired-dad dabbling act, drink a damn fine cup of coffee and get behind the camera. We all have more to learn.

Six months after the announcement of Showtime's Twin Peaks revival in October 2014, with a third season set to air in 2016, it has emerged that David Lynch is no longer involved with the project due to issues with contract negotiations, although the fated third season may still go ahead. Without Lynch, however, there is no Twin Peaks.

With the scripts already completed and actors and fans alike eager for this to go ahead with Lynch at the helm, we are urging Showtime to give David Lynch the contract he is after, or let HBO, Netflix or another network give the world what it wants and save Twin Peaks.

Three weeks after director David Lynch caused a storm with his public departure from the continuation on Showtime, it looks like the dark clouds over Twin Peaks are finally dissipating and blue skies could be emerging.

While several anonymous sources are optimistic, Dana Ashbrook was actually outspoken about the matter in front of a large crowd at last Sunday’s Antwerp Convention in Belgium. During a Q&A on stage, the actor told fans that negotiations for a David Lynch-directed series are back on, confirming Showtime’s repeated statements in e-mails and interviews. Things are looking way better than they did on Easter Sunday, he added, and there’s a fifty-fifty chance that David Lynch will return to direct the 9 new episodes. UPDATE: Dana said Mark Frost’s The Secret Lives of Twin Peaks book is completed, but its release is uncertain and depends on the ongoing negotiations with Showtime.

On a fun side note: Dana, who first learned from Sheryl Lee that he was going to be cast again, also mentioned that David Lynch asked him if he’d been practicing “walking backwards” lately, as we see Bobby Briggs do in the pilot and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.
“You've been practicing walking backwards?” —David Lynch to Dana Ashbrook #TwinPeaks2016
Click To Tweet

Add Dana’s report on the ongoing negotiations to recent yet vague and often metaphoric statements, like this “It’s still blurry but coming into focus” tweet by Sherilyn Fenn (Audrey Horne) along with a recent photo of her and Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer), and you’d almost get your hopes up. Almost. But fifty-fifty is still far away from 100% so keep crossing your fingers until we hear from Mark Frost and/or David Lynch.

David Lynch To Direct 18 (!) New Episodes Of Twin Peaks, Scored By Angelo Badalamenti, Shot In Washington State

I will tell you three things. If I tell them to you and they come true, then will you believe me?
    —The Giant

David Lynch will direct 18 new episodes of Twin Peaks.
Angelo Badalamenti is composing brand new music for the series.
Twede’s Cafe in North Bend, WA, will be restored as the original Double R Diner set.

I’ll let that sink in for a minute.

Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer) and Sherilyn Fenn (Audrey Horne) at Crypticon

These three revelations were made this afternoon by Sherilyn Fenn and Sheryl Lee during a Twin Peaks panel at Crypticon in Seattle. “Yes. Those were the major reveals,” someone close to the organization of the convention confirmed in a message to Welcome to Twin Peaks. “They didn’t seem to know much past that,” he added.

Seriously, that’s about all the mind-blowing Twin Peaks news we can deal with at once. We’ll see twice the number of new episodes than originally expected. Even more beautiful music by maestro Badalamenti will be added to the already enormous soundtrack archive. And the backdrop for the new series will be the beautiful Pacific Northwest again, including North Bend and Snoqualmie, WA. And we will all be able to enjoy a slice of cherry pie and damn good coffee at the original Double R Diner again!

Oh yeah, and shooting is now said to start in September. Start planning your pilgrimage!

Kyle MacLachlan “Really, Really Excited” To Get Back Into The World Of Twin Peaks After Hearing David Lynch And Mark Frost’s Plans For Dale Cooper

by Twin Pie on Jun 2, 2015 • 9:55 AM • 4 Comments

Kyle MacLachlan and David Lynch behind the scenes of Twin Peaks

Kyle MacLachlan hasn’t read David Lynch and Mark Frost’s new scripts yet —he’s heading to Los Angeles in a few days to sit down with the masterminds and “move through it”— but he just told The Wall Street Journal that what he knows is enough to get excited.

“David and I have spoken a little bit. He’s asked me to be pretty tight-lipped about what we discussed. He hasn’t talked in great detail about relationships, or who or what or who with, those kinds of questions, but what he said specifically about [Dale Cooper] has made me really, really excited to get back into that world.”

But what the actor is most excited about, is working with David Lynch again. “It’s been such a long time since I’ve actually worked with David Lynch,” he said. “Our friendship is strong, and our working relationship is something I’m really excited to get back into.”

Showtime hasn’t set a production start date yet, but Kyle told WSJ he heard that they could start filming the new Twin Peaks in September or October. A pleasant and beautiful time to be shooting in the Pacific Northwest, right?

“We’ve always harbored a dream that we might be able to get back to [Dale Cooper] somehow. Never really thought it would happen, but here you go.”

UPDATED The New X-Files Trailer is Now HD!

Silas Lesnick Sep 29, 2015

We want to believe in the new X-Files trailer for the upcoming revival.
A new X-Files trailer is now online, offering a tease of the upcoming revival

Last night, during both “Gotham” and “Minority Report,” FOX aired two halves of the first official X-Files trailer for their upcoming revival series. We’ve now updated yesterday’s fan-provided captures and are pleased to present, in the player below, the full quality X-Files trailer!

The X-Files returns to FOX with a special two-night event beginning Sunday, Jan. 24 (10:00-11:00 PM ET/7:00-8:00 PM PT), following the NFC Championship Game, and continuing with its time period premiere on Monday, Jan. 25 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT).

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprise their iconic roles as Agent Fox Mulder and Agent Dana Scully in the upcoming event series which will encompass a mixture of stand-alone investigative episodes and those that further the original show’s seminal mythology. In the opening episode, Mulder and Scully take on a case of a possible alien abductee. The all-new episodes will feature appearances by guest stars, including Joel McHale (“Community”), Robbie Amell (“The Flash”), Lauren Ambrose (“Dig,” “Six Feet Under”), Annabeth Gish (“The Bridge”), Annet Mahendru (“The Americans”), Rhys Darby (“Flight of the Conchords”), Kumail Nanjiani (“Silicon Valley”) and William B. Davis, who reprises his role as “Cigarette Smoking Man.” Three of the episodes are written and directed by Chris Carter, with the remaining new episodes written and directed by original series veterans Glen Morgan, Darin Morgan and James Wong.

The X-Files originally premiered in September 1993. Over the course of its nine-season run, the influential series went from breakout sci-fi favorite to massive global hit, and became one of the most successful television dramas of all time. The show, which earned 16 Emmy Awards, five Golden Globes and a Peabody Award, follows FBI special agents Scully (Anderson) and Mulder (Duchovny), as they investigate unexplained cases – “X-Files” – for which the only answers involve paranormal phenomena.

Actor Michael Ontkean Will Not Pick Up Harry S. Truman’s Sheriff Badge For The New Twin Peaks
by TWIN PIE on Oct 8, 2015 • 2:00 PM • 35 Comments

For unnamed reasons, Michael Ontkean will not be coming out of retirement as an actor in Hawaii to reprise his role as (Sheriff) Harry S. Truman in the new Twin Peaks.

The 69-year-old actor, last seen on screen as cousin Milo in Alexander Payne’s The Descendants in 2011, mentioned this as early as August during a phone call with Reflections author, Brad Dukes, who today tweeted the following regarding Ontkean’s absence from the third season:

So, I have a few things to say about the news of Michael Ontkean not returning to Twin Peaks: I spoke with Michael a handful of times this year on the phone. He was really excited to return as Truman, and even spent hundreds of hours in search of his old jacket, and finally reached out to me to help find it. We found a suitable replica. I bought it and sent it to him. We last spoke in August and he informed me he wasn’t going to Washington after all. I told him I was heartbroken to hear that.

Aside from being heartbroken, I am puzzled. Twin Peaks is not Twin Peaks without Michael Ontkean as Sheriff Harry S. Truman.

Michael was the very last actor to join the cast of the Twin Peaks pilot back in 1989, after Robert Forster had to pass on the role due to another commitment. From Brad Dukes’ book, his account of his meeting with David Lynch:
It was winter when [David Lynch and I] first met. I had on a coat that Mitsuhiro Matsuda made for me to resemble and replace the worn-out biker jacket I’d been wearing since 1961 as a teenage ember of The Black Diamond Riders motorcycle gang in Canada. David’s birthday is only two days before mine so there was some sort of immediate affinity, but he offered me the part of Sheriff Harry S. Truman just to be able to see more of that motorcycle jacket.
–Michael Ontkean
The on-screen brotherhood between Harry and Kyle MacLachlan‘s Coop was one of the numerous strengths of the original series, so while it’s likely that the character will return, it will be hard for fans to see someone else filling the man’s shoes. Even if he’s being recast with —as rumored— the original Sheriff, Robert Forster.

David Lynch begs ‘Twin Peaks’ fans to stop leaking plot details on Twitter

by Larry Carroll at 02:09 PM on Sep 12, 2015

Fans of “Twin Peaks” are as fiercely loyal to the show as Jerry Horne is to his Parisian brie sandwiches — and that loyalty paid off in a major way when it was announced that the groundbreaking drama would be rebooting itself some 25 years after it went off the air. Now, as the show has begun filming its long-awaited Season 3, the self-professed “Twin Peaks Freaks” are being asked by David Lynch to stop posting pictures of the set or they might ruin some surprises that aim to be as sweet as the Double R Diner’s cherry pie.

RELATED: Zap2it Quiz: How well do you remember ‘Twin Peaks’?

The@TwinPeaksArchve account on Twitter has become a de facto destination-hub for all “Twin Peaks” news as cameras have begun rolling on the Showtime series. From small stuff (set designers painting bricks, fencing being erected at the Hurley house) to reappearances of familiar faces (Everett McGill as Big Ed Hurley, Wendy Robie as drapery-obsessed Nadine) to full-on spoilers (which we’ll try to avoid here), the buzz on social media has become quite loud among would-be sleuths hanging around the set. But amid all the fun pictures from fans who’ve seen base camp or commented on David Lynch’s choice of headwear, the creators of the show have begun to fear that everything is getting a bit too transparent.

Twin Peaks @TwinPeaksArchve
Word has just reached me that David Lynch is not pleased with spoilers coming from the set. To respect David and Mark, we will stop at once.

In a tweet, the administrator of the popular Twin Peaks destination says that Lynch and series producer Mark Frost have asked that spoilers stop being posted from the set. Shortly thereafter, Frost himself tweeted a message of thanks to everyone for politely backing off a bit.

Mark Frost ✔@mfrost11
All will be revealed in due time. In the meantime, thanks to all for helping us #KeepTheMysteryAlive !!
12:31 PM - 12 Sep 2015

Now, instead of blurry photos of Big Ed’s butt, the new marching orders seem to be best reflected in Frost’s hashtag: #KeepTheMysteryAlive. It’s enough to make you wonder how different things would have been watching “Twin Peaks” in 1990, when it enjoyed its highest ratings, if social media had existed. Instead of set designer Frank Silva accidentally walking into a shot and having Lynch decide he’d be perfect to portray Laura Palmer’s killer, perhaps Silva would’ve tweeted about his mistake and never been lured into acting. If there were crude, behind-the-scenes camera phone pics of the red room online, would it have been nearly as haunting?

RELATED: ‘Twin Peaks’ promises ‘satisfying’ answers about Agent Cooper and the Black Lodge

Almost universally, fans reacted to the request from Lynch and Frost not with anger or disappointment, but with refreshing understanding. For now, it seems, the world of “Twin Peaks” can continue to develop its new voice without fear of premature dissection. And accounts like @TwinPeaksArchve will attempt to walk the fine line between excitement and over-indulgence.

35 Photos from the Set of the Twin Peaks Revival

DAVID LYNCH TV NEWS TV PREMIERE DATES TV SHOW NEWS TWIN PEAKS
BY SPENCER PERRY ON OCTOBER 2, 2015

First photos from the set of the Twin Peaks revival

Production is underway on the Twin Peaks revival, and we’ve got 35 photos from the set of the series! In the images below you’ll see a number of the locations currently being used for filming, including the infamous “Welcome to Twin Peaks” sign, a Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Department car, and even director David Lynch in action! Check them out below.

Kyle MacLachlan is set to return as Dale Cooper, with a number of other characters from the original series also expected to appear. He’s joined by series newcomers Amanda Seyfried (“Big Love,” Ted 2) and Balthazar Getty (“Brothers & Sisters,” The Judge).

Lynch and co-creator Mark Frost wrote the new set of episodes as one extended movie, which will be cut into episodes once they’ve reached the editing phase. Plans originally called for nine installments, but that number was doubled to eighteen. The new episodes are slated to air on Showtime in 2016.

Airing from April 1990 to June 1991, the ABC era of Twin Peaks (as well as the 1992 prequel film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me) followed the inhabitants of a quaint northwestern town who were stunned after their homecoming queen Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) is shockingly murdered. The town’s sheriff welcomed the help of FBI agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan), who came to town to investigate the case. As Cooper conducted his search for Laura’s killer, the town’s secrets were gradually exposed. The mystery that ensued set off an eerie chain of events that plunged the inhabitants of Twin Peaks into a darker examination of their very existence. Twenty-five years later, the story continues…
