One thing I found quite interesting in Admiral Byrd's writings was that he observed- I paraphrase as the book is not at hand- "a coal seam so large that it would serve the needs of all the Earth for decades to come."

With all the erergy mumbo jumbo aside there are an awfully large amount of uses for coal in energy production in a clean manner.  All coal use is not dirty.  Of course there is a moratorium on any exploitation of resources there so....... Undecided
